Soil Amendments

There are many factors to consider when choosing a soil amendment. Here is a summary article from Colorado State University Extension that has many useful ideas and good information.

When you need extra soil, mulch, and/or compost for most smaller landscape jobs, it is generally easier to purchase bagged goods available at virtually all nurseries and garden centers. Some landscape jobs require such a large quantity of these products that it begins to make sense to buy in bulk. Buying in bulk does require either paid delivery of the product or access to some sort of truck so that you can do the pick-up and delivery. Prices vary a lot, so be sure to enquire about the terms.

While we do not recommend any one particular source, the list below should permit you to find what you need.

We encourage you to send us a comment, using the form below, on any positive experiences you have with any of the sources listed below and/or let us know of any additional sources that should be included. This will help us to be of even greater assistance to the gardening public in Orange County.

I no longer have a compost bin, so where, in Van Nuys, do I buy compost or humous for my azaleas? dd

We have contacted Aguinaga Fertilizer Co Inc and the problem with trash (plastic, metal, styrofoam) in their mulch has been corrected. If you still find this to be a problem, please let us know.

Every year I go to Aguinaga Green and get my fertilizer. They always pull through and turn my garden into my own mini jungle by the end of the year! Their Irvine location has NEVER let me down! I have ordered probably 8 truck loads of different composts from them in my life time and I can tell you that out of all that fertilizer, I have NEVER seen a noticeable piece of trash in any of it! So Chris, maybe your trash was from your old dirt? Or maybe you just a bad batch? Or the truck you used wasn't cleaned out? But I don't think that's fair to say when out of my 8 loads and your one load, 1/9 truck loads had a piece of trash. I think that's still pretty good odds. Anyway, I think you shouldn't be turned off by the trash comment until you go and look at their piles for yourself! Make sure to go to their Irvine yard and try to catch Mr. Roger Aguinaga (the owner) as he knows pretty much EVERYTHING there is to know about fertilizer. If you don't see what you need, ask them to make you a special blend for your specific needs. He can make ANYTHING! :) Aguinaga has made me a VERY happy gardener and customer since the first time I bought from them! I trust whatever Mr. Aguinaga tells me to get, because it always works and I always end up with beautiful flowers and tasty big vegtibles in my garden each and every year! And make sure to say, "Hello!" to their cute sweet little Chihuahua named Junior when you go in there! He's their guard dog. :)

I just started using Serrano Creek compost a few months ago. Not only is the staff helpful and knowledgable, but they were nice too! As far as the compost itself goes, I hope it works as good as it looks! And if you bring back to bags they sell it in they take off $.50 per bag on your next purchase! The only thing I'm wondering is how long it will take to breakdown 3-4"...?

SERRANO CREEK: Matt from SC disagrees with the salt issue and he has performed field tests with positive results. He has also used his product on all of his properties and has many satisfied customers. I have personally used his compost on my property without any noticeable negative effects.

Aguinaga has high-quality soil amendments that I have found to be very satisfactory. They will do custom mixes of any percentages you want of top soil, peat, humus, pumice, sand, and other ingredients. They also have a number of ready-made mixes, such as cactus mix. They do bulk deliveries or you can pick up an order with your own truck.

SERRANO CREEK: There last soils report stated EC (salt) at 18%. My understanding is that you want EC under 10%. I'm still waiting for a response from Matt, the owner.

For the last two years I have used compost from Serrano Creek Soil/Stable. They do their own composting of horse manure and cedar shavings. They will not sell it until it is finished and odorless. You can't beat the price of $14 a yard (scoop.) And the owner, Matt is very knowledgable and helpful.

The phone number listed for Quality Mulch & Topsoil is no longer in service. I did a search online to see if a different number may be listed, but the two numbers listed are also out of service.

I also like the "Serrano Creek Material". I use it as an amendment in my raised beds, a top dressing, and bedding material for my vermicomposting beds. His composting process is "1st Class". Highly recommend!

One of my favorite places to purchase compost is at Serrano Creek Ranch & Equestrian Center in Lake Forest. It is the only equestrian center in Orange County certified as a composting facility. Their 'horse' compost is wonderful and affordable. My plants and trees have noticeably improved with it. See at: http://www.serranocreeksoils.com/contact_us
