Water Strategies
To continue the subject of Water started in last week's show, the team at In the Garden with UC Master Gardeners have another program for you! Despite the heavy rains we experienced during the holidays 2021, forecast is still tending toward huge impacts with drought.

This week, MG Kris Bonner talks to Juan Garcia of the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) about water-saving strategies in the landscape for residents. IRWD is advising customers that “brown is the new green”.

The ideal ratio of plant material to turf is 40% drought friendly landscape and 60% turf. More savings in your water budget can be had with a higher percentage of the former. You may learn about ideas such as turf replacement, bioswales, and drip irrigation also. Even if you don't live in the IRWD, Juan's advice and references to the IRWD water saving resources may be better than what your own water district provides. Get good information wherever you can find it!
