With his wealth of information on exotic and invasive pests that are plaguing California’s plants, Dr. John Kabashima will tell you what is causing the problem and how you can manage it.  IPM (Integrated Pest Management) methods will be presented along with tips and tricks for making your garden strong enough to withstand the threats that could come its way.

John started his education with a BS in Ag Biology at Cal Poly Pomona, picked up his MS in Pest Management at UC Riverside, earned an MBA at Pepperdine University and his Ph.D. in Entomology at UC Riverside.  John has been the Environmental Horticulture Advisor with the University of California Cooperative Extension for the past 24 years.  He is currently coordinating and supervising insect, disease and weed management in ornamental horticulture production systems, and biological control of exotic pests for the county.    
 
John has additional interests in managing the Master Gardener volunteer program which uses formally trained volunteers of the UC ANR to extend university based information on gardening and horticulture to the public.  He has contributed his time and knowledge to the California Association of Pest Control Advisors (CAPCA), Entomological Society of America, California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers and the Golf Course Superintendents of Association of Southern California.  Additionally, John serves on a number of advisory groups including the Glassy Wing Sharp Shooter Nursery Task Force, Orange County Red Imported Fire Ant Committee and the Newport Bay/San Diego Creek Watershed Committee.
 
Dr. Kabashima has been recognized and awarded the 2010 Entomological Society of America Team Award for California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) Pest Ant Management, 2008 Western Extension Director’s Award for Excellence for Farm Water Planning and many education and research acknowledgments.

John has been a lifelong Pest Control Advisor and contributing member to the Southern California Chapter of the California Association of Pest Control Advisors.  Each year this organization gives an award to one individual who has gone far beyond others in support of Agriculture.  Dr. John Kabashima received the award as the 2011 honoree for Outstanding Contribution to Agriculture.
